Tsavo Trust - Wildlife Ranger Challenge 2024
Tsavo Trust is taking on the Wildlife Ranger Challenge to raise awareness of the vital role our 37 rangers play in protecting Kenya's Tsavo Conservation Area, and supporting an estimated 4000 livelihoods.
Our Story
Rangers are Africa’s unsung heroes. They hold diverse roles as conservationists, teachers, community support workers, leaders and much more.
The Wildlife Ranger Challenge, organised by Tusk, is a celebration of solidarity, connection and camaraderie for the ranger profession. Culminating on 21st September 2024, the campaign raises vital funds for Africa's biodiversity guardians.
Tsavo Trust- Tsavo Conservation Area comprises 49% of Kenya’s Protected Areas. It has vast and varied wilderness habitats that provide huge potential for wildlife growth. It holds Kenya’s largest single elephant population – 14,964 elephants (41% of Kenya's Elephant)
Between 2013 and 2022, Tsavo Trust played a significant role alongside KWS in reducing elephant poaching by over 70% in the TCA. In 2021 alone, 781 hours were flown, covering 86,129 kms. Our combined aerial and ground Tsavo Trust / KWS deployments accounted for 120 arrests, the recovery of 82 elephant tusks, the removal of 1,233 snares and recovery of 1,158 kilograms of bushmeat.
Since inception, the same joint efforts as above accounted for 860 arrests, 50 responses to armed contacts, the recovery of 741 elephant tusks, locating 258 poacher camps / hides, the recovery of 4,627 kilograms of bushmeat and the recovery of 5,880 wire snares to mention a few notable statistics.
